Besen Neckpieces

A ‘Besen’ in German is traditionally a long handled broom fashioned from straw and twigs for sweeping. Often a ‘Besen’ is depicted as a slightly worn, tattered object. In fairytales and stories witches were said to ride them! ‘Besen’ is also a derogatory expression to describe an older woman. The qualities of an aged broom are liberally applied to the imagery of women. These Besen Neckpieces are celebratory objects of resistance where the visual beauty and ingenuity speaks of wisdom, knowledge and reverence.
